The Best Perennial Plants for Chicago Suburb Gardens

February 15, 20266 min readBy Russel J. Lokun

Choosing the right perennial plants for your Chicago suburb garden is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your landscape. The right plants will reward you with years of beauty with minimal maintenance, while the wrong choices can lead to frustration and replanting costs.

Understanding Our Climate

The north and northwest Chicago suburbs fall primarily in USDA Hardiness Zone 5b, with some areas in Zone 6a. This means we experience cold winters with temperatures that can dip to -15°F, hot and humid summers, and unpredictable spring weather. The good news is that many stunning perennials are perfectly suited to these conditions.

Top Perennial Choices for Our Area

Echinacea (Coneflower) — Perhaps the most reliable perennial for our area, coneflowers bloom from midsummer through fall in shades of pink, purple, white, and orange. They're drought-tolerant once established and attract pollinators.

Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan) — These cheerful yellow flowers bloom from July through September and naturalize readily. They're virtually indestructible and provide excellent fall color.

Salvia nemorosa — Ornamental salvias produce stunning spikes of blue-purple flowers in early summer and often rebloom if cut back. They're deer-resistant and drought-tolerant.

Ornamental Grasses — Karl Foerster feather reed grass, switchgrass, and little bluestem provide year-round interest with their graceful movement and winter seed heads.

Design Tips for Chicago Suburb Gardens

When designing perennial gardens for our area, consider planting in drifts of three to five plants for visual impact. Layer plants by height, with taller specimens like Joe-Pye weed or ornamental grasses in the back, mid-height plants like coneflowers and black-eyed Susans in the middle, and low-growing plants like creeping phlox or sedums at the front.
